Although our country and our region face major upheaval on multiple fronts—from public health to the economy to racial injustice—SV2 sees this as an opportunity to rethink and reinvent, and to become more inspired, inclusive, and impactful in the way we address Silicon Valley’s challenges and support effective solutions. 2019-2020 Year in Review

Amidst rapidly changing circumstances, SV2 is grateful for our community of Partners, Grantees, Impact Investees, and Colleagues who are allies in our work. The multiple challenges facing our region and world required a rapid response and pivot this year – and created opportunities to give and learn together in new ways.

Farewell and Thank you to Lisa and Mariam

As SV2 staff members Lisa Van Dusen and Mariam Nur are both moving on to new adventures this month, please join us in celebrating their many accomplishments and thanking them for their service to SV2’s mission. Lisa will become the next Executive Director of the Palo Alto Community Fund starting in mid-July, sharing her talents and experience as a long-time community leader in a new way. Mariam will be pursuing a Master in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School with a concentration in International & Global Affairs this fall.

Welcoming SV2 Intern, David!

David is currently a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara studying Economics. He aspires to go into venture capital or wealth management and hopes to learn about impact investing this summer. In the past, David has interned and volunteered at Facebook, Kaiser Permanente, Next-Gen Personal Finance, the Boys and Girls Club, and Peninsula Bridge. This summer, he will be supporting SV2’s Beyond-the-Dollars Program, virtual programs, and the transition of mySV2 to a new online platform, among other things.

 

Welcome, new Partner!

Praneetha Manthravadi is an immigrant from India who came to this country 28 years ago to pursue higher education. She currently lives in Saratoga with her husband and two teenage sons. She is grateful for all the opportunities this country has given her to pursue a 20+ year career in Silicon Valley, working at some of the most prestigious companies like Intel, Cisco, EMC and some exciting startups in hardware engineering and product management roles. She has also had the opportunity to donate to and volunteer at organizations like food banks, Habitat for Humanity, Feed my Starving Children to help support the homeless and children's causes.

WED. JUL. 8 | 6:30PM - 7:30PM

Social and mySV2 Hivebrite Onboarding - Virtual Event

Starting June 1st, 2020 SV2 officially transitioned to a new online community platform: Hivebrite. All SV2 Partners will move from the current my.SV2 platform to our new platform (it will also be called mySV2). We’re hopeful this new platform will enhance productivity, collaboration, and our sense of community! To help Partners transition to the new platform, we encourage you to sign up for one of the four onboarding sessions during June and July, which will include a social catchup and platform onboarding.

July Impact Investing Working Group - Virtual Event

The SV2 Impact Investing Working Group discusses prospective impact investment opportunities, hears pitches from social entrepreneurs, and performs due diligence in order to make informed investment recommendations on behalf of SV2. The Working Group is comprised of Partners who are committed to actively participating in all aspects of impact investing, including the due diligence process. All Partners are welcome to begin regularly attending IIWG meetings at any point in the year or are welcome to audit meetings on a drop-in basis. Program will begin at 11:30am.

Board-hosted Partner Gathering: Discussion on Democracy - Virtual Event

Partners are invited to join SV2 Board member Christy Chin for an end-of-day cocktail/mocktail on Tuesday, July 21 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm for a discussion on democracy, specifically how to ensure a safe and secure election in November.   Voter turnout is predicted to be higher than 2018 midterms.  Voting during a pandemic and protests are  new challenges, as indicated by Georgia’s Primary.  In preparation for this meeting, we encourage Partners to read the Brennan Center for Justice’s framework on preparing for high turnout and efforts to ensure all Americans can vote.

Social Impact Bookclub – Virtual Event

The SV2 Book Club meets monthly to discuss the latest book on their reading list and explore social issues. During the July 26 meeting, SV2 Partners will discuss: Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations, Mira Jacob. All SV2 Partners are invited to participate. A Conversation about Meaning, Giving and Leadership with SV2 Founder Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen - Virtual Event

Join us for a special conversation with SV2 Founder and Board Chairman Emeritus Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen. At this pivotal moment in history, Laura and SV2 Board Chair Alison Elliott will discuss exciting opportunities ahead for strategic social investors to engage in meaningful impact. As a philanthropic thought leader and SV2’s founder, Laura brings a unique perspective to how SV2’s venture philanthropy approach plays a special role in transforming giving practices and accelerating positive social change.

Etho Capital’s Unique Approach to Values Aligned Public Equities Investing – Virtual Event

The Partner-led Impact Investing Interest Circle is teaming up with the Environment Partner Interest Circle (EPIC) to deliver a session that will be of interest to participants in both groups. Most of us have public equities in our portfolio and if they aren’t yet values aligned, there is opportunity for more impact. Come hear about Etho Capital with their flagship climate and ESG leadership exchange traded fund (the ETHO ETF). With Etho’s unique data driven approach, they aim to find the best companies supporting the environment, social justice, and equality while delivering market rate returns.
