Welcome, SV2 Teens 2021 Community Partners!

This year, SV2 Teens decided to learn more about advancing equity in education. We’re so excited to warmly welcome our newest and awesome Community Partners to the SV2 family: Breakthrough Silicon Valley, Californians for Justice, and StreetCode Academy! Teens allocated a $20,000 grant across all three organizations in an energizing and collaborative process, and advanced in their own changemaker journeys. We learned so much about racial equity, community leadership, enduring and real change, taking a strengths based as well as co-creative approach to social impact, and more. We’re honored to have cultivated friendships with leaders across all three organizations, and in the spirit of youth leadership and changemaking, to have had such amazing Teen leaders throughout our program - ages 11-17!

SV2 Spring Gathering Recap: The Power of Community Voices in Changemaking

We’re delighted that our virtual Spring Gathering turned out to be a friendly, light, and connective success! We had over 80 attendees who selected their own breakouts throughout the program. Special thanks to our accomplished and wonderful Community Partners and leaders for sharing their inspiring changemaker stories and work with us: Nasir Qadree (Zeal Capital Partners), Dr. Linda Prieto, (Upward Scholars), Laura Camberos (Mujeres Unidas y Activas), Diane Bailey (Menlo Spark), Diana Phuong, (Braven Bay Area), DeJuan Lewis (Defy Ventures-Northern California), and Bart Myers (Countable). We’re also grateful for our partnership with Brenda Graciano (Upward Scholars), and Luis Romero (Upward Scholars), our fantastic Interpreters! We strongly recommend the ¡Habla Más! Program. If you want to learn Spanish or want interpretation support, you can hire a Coach in the ¡Habla Más! Program. Attendees shared some reflections and takeaways - check out our community collage!

Farewell and Thank you to Lucinda Brommersma

As SV2 staff member Lucinda Brommersma is moving on to new adventures this month, please join us in celebrating her many contributions to SV2’s mission as Director of Partner Engagement. We will have an opportunity to thank Lucinda at a Zoom celebration on Tuesday, June 29 at 5pm before she and her family move back to Canada this summer.

Welcome, New Partners & Renewing Partners!

Kathryn Phillips  has spent most of her career at UCSF where she is trying to “solve” the challenges of health care as a Professor of Health Economics and Director, UCSF Center for Translational and Policy Research on Personalized Medicine. Her partner Gary Grellman, now retired, spent 30 years as a global senior executive with Levi Strauss & Co and another 7 years in the nonprofit sector with Goodwill Industries. They have long-standing interests in social justice, women’s reproductive health, and using science and reasoned discourse to address society’s challenges.

Vivian Thai is currently a Senior Associate Program Manager for New Product Launches at Equinix. She is a board member of the non-profit organization, Taiwanese American Junior Chamber of Commerce - Northern California. Vivian enjoys meeting new people, traveling, learning new things, and drinking a homemade matcha latte every morning. She is excited to participate in SV2 and take a part in making an impact in the community.

Kasey McJunkin is passionate about youth development and educational equity.  She has worked as a teacher, tutor, volunteer and board member with several youth development nonprofits in the Bay Area and Tahoe. She lives in Truckee with her husband and two teenage daughters, where she provides college access support for first generation students.  Kasey previously lived in the Bay Area and worked in consulting, marketing and strategy.  She has a BA from Princeton and an MBA from Stanford.  Kasey and her family are interested in learning more about efforts to address the massive inequities in K-12 and post-secondary education.

Renewing Partners: Thanks to these Partners for their continued support to enable SV2's high-impact grantmaking and learning programs in the year ahead.

Investing for Racial Equity: Wrap-Up Session

The Impact Investing Interest Circle meets to explore impact investing across asset classes beyond the direct investments the Impact Investing Working Group is typically focused on. We have finished a four part series on Investing for Racial Equity, and this upcoming session is meant to be a wrap up and to equip Partners with practical next steps in deploying capital. Joining us will be impact financial advisors Eric Stephenson and Ishita Shah from Align Impact who will provide relevant updates and answer any questions big and small. We will also (i) cover the Due Diligence 2.0 pledge designed to end practices that systemically penalize newer BIPOC and female investment fund managers, (ii) have time to reflect and discuss learnings with fellow SV2 Partners, (iii) give Partners time for any of their own updates and (iv) answer impact investing questions beyond those involving racial equity (no question is too basic). You do not need to have attended the four part series to attend this meeting.

SV2 Partner Outdoor Social

After many months of online programming, Jim and David look forward to this special opportunity to catch up with Partners as we move towards more in-person programming. To assist managing numbers for this event, we are limiting it to current SV2 Partners. Jim’s address will be shared with Partner attendees following registration.

We will continue to monitor state, county and local municipal guidelines to ensure we can host a safe event for all attendees.
