Confronting Truths, Changing Narratives, and Impacting Systems: SV2’s Get Proximate Initiative
As funders at SV2 we are all committed to everyone thriving to their fullest potential. SV2’s Get Proximate Initiative is a deep learning journey
rooted in an Empathy to Action cycle to help realize that vision. Through different perspectives and voices, we can better understand systemic barriers and inequalities and our role as partners in addressing them. This article is the first in a series about the principles and practice of getting proximate. We are also excited about embedding getting proximate in SV2’s work and planning for a workshop in February 2021 as well as experiential activities with the North Fair Oaks community.
To keep current with Get Proximate activities and information, please join the Get Proximate community on mySV2 (for SV2 Partners). For any questions about Get Proximate, please contact Paru Desai.

The Environment Partner Interest Circle (EPIC) Sniffs out Wildfires and Extreme Conditions
Ten cigarettes a day! Due to the recent fires, outdoor workers, like gardeners, package deliverers, or city maintenance personnel, each smoked ten cigarettes. Wildfires are destroying lives, livelihoods, and neighborhoods at an increasing pace. Not seeing flames does not mean you are safe. Cigarette anyone? At EPIC’s session on wildfires you will hear from local
citizens sharing their real-world experiences – building resilience; fleeing wildfires, recovering from the devastation, managing financial and business consequences. And participants will have the opportunity to dive into more detail during breakout sessions.
Wildfires are part of California. Fifteen years from now, will we say August 2020 was the worst ever or not so bad compared to 2035. How will you improve our future?
